8:50 AM-10:05 AM | Probability and Risk of Slope Failure Francisco Silva-Tulla, Sc.D., P.E., GeoEngineering and Environment The presentation will aim to demystify the use of risk assessment as a decision management tool and present a methodology that places quantitative risk assessment within reach of every geotechnical engineer, even for routine engineering assignments. Dr. Silva will introduce a semi empirical relationship between factor of safety and annual probability of failure that permits estimation of slope failure probabilities with relatively modest effort. A case study based on an actual consulting assignment for a tailings dam will show that risk assessment based on quantification of expert judgment provides a framework to arrive at rational management and engineering decisions related to dam safety and other geotechnical problems. |

10:25 AM-11:15 AM | Slope Failure by Static Liquefaction: A Case Study Gonzalo Castro, Ph.D., P.E., GEI Consultants, Inc. The findings of a post failure investigation will be used to explain the mechanism of static liquefaction, with emphasis on the stress strain properties of the material that liquefied. |

11:15 AM-12:05 PM | Reinforced Soil Slopes and MSE Walls Barry Christopher, Ph.D., P.E., Consultant This presentation will focus on the design and construction of reinforced soil systems with an emphasis on green structures. A brief background on reinforced soil technologies and applications will be presented including the advantages, economic considerations, and limitations of each type of system as compared to other conventional practices. An overview of design methods with reference to current design codes/standards and software, will be covered. Special issues that have on occasion resulted in undesirable performance will be reviewed. |

1:25 PM-2:15 PM | Soil Bioengineering – Where Engineering Meets Ecology "Robbin B. Sotir, Robbin B. Sotir & Associates, Inc. Soil bioengineering technology uses sound engineering practices and ecological principles to protect and restore land. In combination with reinforcement systems it is able to provide highly steepened, fully vegetated slope system. Such measures go far beyond providing simply a stable slope but further provide for an ecologically enhanced and aesthetically pleasing sustainable product. |

2:15 PM-3:05 PM | Soil Nailing: The Good, Bad and the Ugly Harry Schnabel, P.E., Schnabel Construction Company Soil nailing is an increasingly popular method of providing support to excavations. It is often cheaper than other types of excavation support which has led to its use in soil and groundwater conditions that are unfavorable. This presentation will review those conditions which are both favorable and unfavorable to soil nailing. |

3:05 PM-3:55 PM | Stabilizing Slopes Using the Platepile Method Richard Short, P.E., G.E., Richard D. Short and Associates The Platepile Method is a non-earthwork type of slope reinforcing developed at a Geologic Hazard District in California. The method was determined to be effective with a program of full scale field tests combined with finite element analyses. Applicable installations include unlined canal slopes, landslide repairs up to 10-feet thick and temporary support of cut slopes during construction. |

ALL SEMINAR ATTENDEES WILL RECEIVE A CERTIFICATE
OF PARTICIPATION VERIFYING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS
In recognition of the fact that an increasing number of professional engineering licensing bodies require members to pursue professional development on a formal basis, DFI provides a general Certificate of Participation for all programs. Currently this certificate is accepted by most state professional engineering licensing bodies as documentation of your pursuit of continuing education requirements. There are however some states that may not accept the general DFI Certificate. It is the responsibility of the individual to determine if hours provided by DFI events are accepted by their licensing body. New York: Approved New York State Professional Development Hours are sought for all DFI events and are pending approval of their Review Board. Those individuals requiring NYS approved hours must follow the guidelines and procedures requested by the event administrators in order to qualify. The procedure typically includes the need to sign in and out on-site at the registration table in order to provide proof of your full attendance of the event. This procedure is subject to change based on NYS requirements. Florida: DFI is an approved provider in the state of Florida. DFI's approval # is 4072 - valid from June 2009 through May 2011. Please make note for your records. Florida State registered professional engineers (P.E.’s) who wish to submit attendance of a DFI event as part of their Florida State license renewal MUST include their Florida State P.E. license number on their pre-registration form. Each event is treated separately so registering for one event with your license number does not register you for any subsequent events for Florida State licensing renewal. If you neglected to include this information for any DFI event registration, please contact the DFI headquarters office at staff@dfi.org or 973-423-4030 prior to the event you are attending. |
