Steel Properties for Micropile Design
Jouko Lehtonen MSc
Micropiles, specially driven piles, are commonly used in northern Europe for underpinning of existing structures. Several steel grades have been used for micropile purpose. Structural hollow sections are common for driven micropiles. So-called high strength steel is commonly in use for drilled piles. The load bearing capacity of micropiles correlates to the steel quality, mainly to yield strength, when the geotechnical bearing capacity of the pile is high enough.
