The Gravel Piles as an Alternative Method of Deep Foundations
Z. Grabowski & Z. Szwech
In many cases, instead of traditional piles, footing on gravel piles can be reasonably substantiated. In the paper are shortly presented the principles of gravel piles designing on the base of nonlinear theory of consolidation as well as are given the examples of its application taken from authors experience. These examples concern: industrial chimney footing and a section of road embankment. In the paper are also presented the method of some nomograms preparing, which give certain simplification and acceleration of the gravel piles designing process, due to value of loading on the subsoil and its allowable settlement. Here is also presented theoretical method of evaluation of some parameters of weak subsoil reinforced by gravel piles, which should be used for calculations. It is necessary because the present methods of weak soils investigations give not accurate data in comparison with its real values.
