Load-Displacement Behavior of Laterally Loaded Rigid Drilled Shafts in Clay

The load-displacement behavior of drilled shafts under lateral loading is highly nonlinear. However, this behavior can be approximated by a simple hyperbola. This representation allows for the objective quantification of an "ultimate" lateral capacity, as well as an initial stiffness. The interpretation ultimate capacity compares well with that calculating using the lateral soil resistance profile proposed by Randolph and Houlsby (1984). The initial stiffness of the hyperbola may be formulated using the solutions for elastic continuum theory by Poulos and Hull (19989) and relevant values of soil modulus.
