Simplified modeling of the dynamic behavior of berthing structures

The failure of certain number of berthing structures show the weakness of static calculation methods which does not take into account the dynamic loads of the berthing ships. In trying to understand how it works, a comparative study was carried out in the laboratory using the analogical plane model of Schneebeli. In this model, the soil is substituted by stacking rollers and the berthing structure by an instrumented plate. Static tests have been done in order to determine the static soil reaction curves. Dynamic tests were conducted using an impact of a mass to simulate the induced forces of ships on berthing structures. A numerical procedure and a simple method developed to predict the behavior of the simulated berthing structure model are presented. A satisfactory agreement between the field and predicted responses was found.
