Load-deflection prediction for laterally loaded piles based on N-SPT values

There are nowadays many methods for the prediction of the displacement of the upper end of a pile. Despite involving sophisticated computations they are useful for the practicing engineer because microcomputers are readily available in almost all design organizations. But a huge difficulty remains not satisfactorily resolved. It is the assessment of the geotechnical parameters, the fundamental inputs for all computations. Besides, the soil parameters to be used with different computational programs are not the same. The results of sixteen loading tests were analyzed and measured values of the deflection of the upper end of the piles were compared with predictions using the elastic theory as suggested by Poulos and Davis, 1980. The elastic parameters were determined on basis of N-SPT values using the correlations proposed by the author.
