The prediction of load-displacement characteristics for axially loaded piles

Based on the analysis of the set of 19 load tests of pile instrumented with strain gauges, hyperbolic equations are suggested as the shaft and toe load-transfer functions of different type of piles in this paper. A computer program has been compiled to calculate load-displacement characteristics of single pile. For each of another set of 25 piles load test data, trial and error analyses by using the suggested load transfer function are performed until the value of critical displacement of pile shaft is found that make calculated load-displacement curves agree well with measured curve within working load. The average ratios of the critical displacement value (Z), which are obtained by above described procedure, to pile diameter (d) for different type of piles are taken as suggested relative values of critical displacement. For precast concrete pile Z/d = 0.013, for steel pipe pile Z/d = 0.01.
