Contrasting Design of single piles and small pile groups to the design of wide pile foundations
Bengt H. Fellenius, Dr. Tech, P.Eng
The response of single piles and small pile groups to load differs considerably from that of wide piled foundations. Yet, the design practice does not usually consider the difference. The paper references current design methods for piled rafts and presents case histories of past and recent observations of response of wide pile groups to load, contrasting it to that of small groups or single piles. The recommendation of the ISSMGE TC212 for design of piled raft foundation is quoted and the implication of the assumptions therein is highlighted. A more simple and useful method of analysis and design is proposed that emphases foundations at sites experiencing regional settlement or influence from adjacent sites.
