Soil improvement through mechanical deep mixing treatment in Thailand

The article reports actual developments and capability of the mechanical deep mixing method to improve soil characteristics according to new contruction techniques and equipments. A case history where the so called "wet deep mixing method" was adopted as soil improvement technique on fluvial and marine deposits at Bang Saphan, Thailand, during the works for the construction of a new steel plant is described. The aim of the soil treatment was to increase the bearing capacity and to reduce the settlement on storage areas for row materials and finished products. The results of preliminary laboratory tests carried out on admixtures with different components dosage are reported. The research was especially devoted to investigate the behavior of cement grout added with sand to increase the strength of treated soil. The evidences verified on job site, the technological parameters adopted to carry out the work and the field quality control on soil treatment obtained respect to design requirements are illustrated.
