A case of a rock mass consolidation for foundation purposes
J. Matos e Silva & F. Machado
A solution for a limestone mass consolidation by using root-piles, in order to allow the execution of a viaduct foundation, is referred. The designer had previously adopted direct foundation, for the columns and abutments, on the limestone formation but, during the construction phase, the excavations shown great heterogeneity of the rock formations. In these conditions the design option, if followed, would lead to considerable risks for the viaduct stability. The adoption of a root-piles solution, for western abutment and column, proved to be of great interest both technically and economically. In the paper the local geological conditions and the conception of the root-piles solution are described.
